The Log Book Project - The Journey

January 1944 - April 2024  •  29297 days  •  549 992.4 km (see details)

The centerpiece of The Log Book Project is the genuine original pilots log book issued to Cyril Devaux from St Lucia in 1944 as he embarked on his quest to join the war effort as a RAF pilot. In 2016 - some 72 years later - an idea is pursued by Cyril Devaux's youngest son Nick Devaux. He sends his late father's log book and family heirloom across the world to Japan seeking the autograph of a WWII veteran as a token of peace and remembrance. When Hiroshima atomic bomb survivor (Hibakusha) Shigeaki Mori-san adds his signature to an ageing page in the log book the project is formally conceived. Today in March 2022 some 6 years later the log book contains over 155 signatures of veterans and witnesses of WWII. Each representing a direct link to those who served and/or suffered incalculable losses during this horrific conflict. In addition to the signatures the journey of the log book is also documented as it travels the world. This TravelMap is an attempt to present the known route traveled by the book - from Canada in 1944 to its current location in Washington, MD today (March 2022).
